Do What You Can Do…

This picture and its saying are fantastic – a little sassy, but fantastic!

To all my fellow auto-immune disease sufferers – I say:  Let’s raise a glass of water and toast ourselves – and to those who don’t understand and don’t want to try to understand – to heck with you!

We may take longer to do some things (work, rest, work again)…we may be more tired and achy…

And you may think we’re whining if we comment on it…but hey, we do look good!  (For those people who say “But you look so good!”)

And if you tell us “but remember there is always someone worse off” – we want to hit you(!) – even though we won’t…

Why do we hate that saying so much?

Not because we pity ourselves…but because it’s demeaning to what we live with.

Are there moments when we feel down, maybe even depressed?  Yes.

What do we do about it?  Well, speaking for myself, I know the best thing to do is let myself feel it…for that hour, day or two…and then pick myself up and move on.

The sun still shines, my family and friends are still here, there is beauty in the world, there is a little (or a lot) good in everyone, and there is always something to be greatful for…yes I spelled it wrong on purpose.

My favorite shirt is from Be.ology and it says:  Be.greatful.  Not only should we be grateful, but we should always strive to be great at what we do!  (I really need to order a new one…mine’s getting worn out!)

Be a great friend, Mom, wife, volunteer, worker, co-worker, blogger, Christian, and woman.

So whether our bodies (and sometimes minds) are what we want them to be or not…let’s do our best!

But most of all – be happy every moment that you can.

Enjoy a good laugh – if you have friends or family that you can laugh with – GREAT.

If not – find those videos on YouTube that make you laugh and watch them!

It’s amazing how much a good laugh can make a difference.

My name is Patty Omerza and I have primary Sjogren’s Syndrome…and I do understand.  I also have thyroid issues, and asthma…and, am recovering from one shoulder torn rotator cuff surgery and starting the process to get surgery on the other one.  I also have sciatica problems from Piriformis Syndrome and Bursitis in both hips…we’re still working on the resolutions for those.  I’ve seen what Alzheimer’s can do to loved ones, and I’ve dealt with PTSD (still am).

So when I say I understand…I really do.

I won’t tell you to get up and exercise – only you know what your body can do.  I’m doing as much as I can right now, until my body is stronger.  Doing my stretches…and my gentle strengthening.  Listening to my body so that I don’t overdo i… because I, like you, will pay for it and need days to recover if I do.

Those are the things other people don’t understand.

But I do.

So, if you need a listening ear…I’m here for you.

If you need a laugh, I’ll try to share one.

That’s what my blog is all about.

Sharing life’s tough moments, it’s funny moments, and being there for each other.

Because that’s something I can do…

And let’s live life greatfully…

Because it WILL make you feel better!

Your friend,

Patty O

  2. Patty, THANK YOU!
I have so many unseen and “hidden” problems and get so sick of hearing things like: Are you sure, or You look healthy or my fave from PTSD–Get over it! My daughter also has an insidious disease called ankylosing spondylitis that’s a horrible, awful type of arthritis and she gets so many insensitive remarks that we never even say it’s a type of arthritis now because it’s so very much worse than people’s knowledge of arthritis.
Anyway, sorry for the rant-it helps to know someone understands.
It’s hard sometimes to not just give up. But I know God’s got my back I keep on trying to move more every day.

    • Oh Robbyfaye:

You are more than welcome. I’ve dealt with all this too for so long, and there’s just a point where enough is enough. If only it were as easy as “just getting over it”! I’m so sorry to hear of your daughters disease, it seems I’ve heard that name somewhere and yes, also heard it’s a really tough one. I’ll keep you both in my prayers – and yes what a great attitude you have – God does have our backs! Take care of yourself and tell your daughter to do the same! God bless!

Hi Patty !!!!! Boy oh boy could I relate to life’s sorrows, joys, pains of all sorts.some happiness in the mix, good friends, close family ties, wars, depression, being a daughter, only sister to three brothers, mother to 3 daughters and our little Angel Lucy. 4 grandsons , 2 great-grandsons,and 2 great grand daughters——and I hope to reach 90 soon and I always say I’m still trying to use what parts of my body work. Of course the easy chair must be nearby and my boyfriend is now a cane to get me through my daily living with ease and confidence for what I hope will be my independence for the time the good Lord allows me….You have a superior attitude towards life and you will do great . Wishing you the best and in your Faith for our purpose on this earth.

  7. Thanks for your blog. Scary disease this thing we have. Good to know there are people out there trying to take it in stride and realizing just how much effort that takes. Will keep you in my prayers and have bookmarked your blog (mine’s on blogger not wordpress so I can’t automatically follow you but am following your tweets – I’m @campyphotos). I follow a lot of travel, photo and other artist’s blogs but this is my first for Sjogren’s. Thanks!

  8. You go, girl! I can so relate to your post and agree ever so much! I too, have my “issues” and am a graduate of the “school of hard knocks”. In fact, I’m sure by now, I have my PhD, but that’s another story. I don’t share my issues to be perceived as a victim, but only as a victor! Thanks for being a witness to what God can do. Some days He allows us to suffer for the sake of His glory! God can do ANYTHING, but He chooses NOT TO DO EVERYTHING. God bless you for your honesty and candor.
