The Puppy Chronicles

We are now on Day 6…

We’ve tried out about 6 or 7 names on him…I know I told you Castle was it.  Well, we changed our minds once again.  I was hedging on Castle, and then Tim called him “Motza-ball” yesterday when he did something silly.  That might sound silly, but it’s a term of endearment for dogs and little children when they’re being funny.  And a new name was born.  We’ll be calling him Motza or Motzy.  It fits…he is all white like mozzarella, and quite silly.

I am happy to report that he has us (almost) fully trained.  When he runs for the front of the house or bathroom, we know he has to go out to go potty (which is the other way).  We’re down to one accident in the house today (don’t ask how many times we run him outside 🙂 )!

Even though he was fine with me taking away his food when he was eating, he’s not so good at giving back the babies toys…we have to work on that.  Gabi has pulled out a spray bottle (water) to try to spray at him when he’s doing something naughty.  We’ll see how that goes.

I have found that he listens to my “time to get serious – you need to listen now” voice.  My daughters would call it my bark.  No pun intended.  The first night we had a few whimpers and whines, added in with a few (very funny) howls.  I “barked” at him from the bedroom “QUIET!” and he was quiet…slowly started again, one more “Quiet!”…quiet…whimpers…one last “Quiet!”…and that was it!  He went to sleep!

That was the first and last night of any noise!  He’s been quiet throughout the night ever since.

Mornings are another story.  Seems we have an early riser, although he’s at least started sleeping until 6ish.  The first few days it was 5…ugh.

I do believe we have a good little man…

And yes, the big man (Tim) loves him dearly…just about as much as Gabi and I do!

OK…now on to a gripe…

When I started this search for a new dog, I started with the shelter websites.  I didn’t need a puppy, I didn’t need a purebred, I just wanted a dog to love.  Little did I know just how expensive it is to adopt a dog from a shelter!  In our area – one of the shelters charges $150.  And in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area it’s $300-$350!

I understand that they want to try to recover some of the costs of taking care of/getting the proper vet care/etc. of these animals, but seriously?  I understand the applications, even the home visits…but does it need to be so expensive?

I know plenty of people who can’t afford to pay that much and yet they would be able to offer an animal a WONDERFUL home – and be able to give food and vet care!

No wonder these animals aren’t getting adopted!

It seems to me that something is wrong with this system.  And, yes, I understand there needs to be a process to make sure these animals aren’t getting into the wrong hands, but I think this is unbelievably and unrealistically expensive.

It’s almost on the verge of being discriminatory against the poor and even middle class.  I don’t say that lightly.

Maybe I’m missing something, and if I am, please point it out to me…because at this point, it seems to me there are too many animals in the shelters and too few people who can afford to take them home.

There.

I’m off my soapbox.

Have a wonderful night everyone…

I have a new puppy sleeping under my living room curtain with only his butt peeking out. 🙂  I thank God that I saw his ad on Facebook and was able to give him a good home.

Patty! Love the soapbox! I have been searching for the last two months and came to the same conclusion. (Actually visited one and fell in love but with the hectic life of Tricia leaving said not until we get back.) I feel for the people at the animal shelter but it cost’s $165 to spay a medium sized dog. At that I would rather get a puppy, who’s history I know, and have it spayed then purchase a dog without the history, and end up with a Binkie. (Sorry we love our shelter dog, but she is scared of everything, skittish, and has really does not listen)

I don’t know how this relates, but I recently saw a story about an animal shelter in New Richmond, Wisconsin . Anyway, it’s a “no kill” shelter and they tend to get animals with disabilities, injuries, and some that just aren’t wanted anymore I guess. That shelter may close down because there just isn’t enough money. It costs her $15,000 per month to run it and with donations going down she has to dip into her own pocket to keep it running. She had stated that if something did change she would have to stop taking animals because she can’t personally afford it anymore. She would keep the ones she has until they found homes but wouldn’t take any new animals after Oct 1st. I’ll attach the link below and you can read about it or watch the video clip that KARE11 did last week. I guess I’m not surprised at how much it costs to get an animal from a shelter knowing that this lady runs hers for $15,000 per month. That’s a lot of money, and with donations going down it only stands to reason that the money to run it has to come from somewhere. I don’t know what pet shops charge anymore, but years ago I know that to buy an animal from a pet shop was more then $200. I used to make my mom take me to the pet shop in the Burnsville mall every time we went there so I could look at the animals, and the puppies there were around $300 at that time and that was probably 20 to 25 years ago. I also remember getting one dog from the pound once and I think that was $75 at the time and that was 20 to 25 years ago too. I’m guessing in that amount of time the price of a pet in either a pet shop, the pound, or a shelter have gone up, everything else has. I wish there was a way to lower the price on shelter dogs too, but I have a feeling it would maybe be cost prohibitive to the shelters and they wouldn’t make enough to cover expenses. A lot of times the animals that end up there spend a lot of time there and they need the vet care while there. Now if there were more turn over that may change. I don’t know, but it would be nice if more animals didn’t have to spend so much time in shelters, and I have a feeling the owners of these shelters feel the same way. They open their homes and hearts to these animals and I think they care and would rather see them with loving families. We did get a shelter dog a couple years ago after we had to put our two labs down within a week of each other. We did get a dog, and I think it was in the $150 range, but he didn’t work out. He was scared to death of the girls riding their bikes. I felt so bad when we had to take him back. He would have been a wonderful dog for a single person or a couple without kids, but with the kids and his fear of their bikes I was worried for the girls safety, and I didn’t want the dog, to do something that may cause him to have to be put down. We didn’t feel it was fair to him to stay here and be in fear and for us to be worried about how he might react to the girls riding their bikes someday. Anyway, here’s the link if you are interested in seeing the story I mentioned above.

    • Thanks for sharing – comments and link!!! I know they have to get paid somehow for their expenses. I don’t know what the answer is, but I sure wish it was more affordable. Like Sheila said, when I looked at the cost of paying for a shelter dog vs the cost of Motzy ($150), we decided to go with Motzy…where we can train him and he doesn’t already have bad habits. A part of me hates saying that, I’d love to give them all a home to be honest. But with watching a 1 & 3 year old, and my health issues, we needed to make sure it was a dog we could train. I’m sure glad Tim didn’t feel that way when he asked me to marry him…with my daughters and my personal baggage! 🙂

Sorry Patty, I have to add one thing… Your puppy is adorable. I forgot to mention that! Also we are adding to our family, a dog that was going to be “surrendered” to a shelter instead is coming to our house. So while we are not “adopting” we are adopting. And our pups will be about the same age so I can actually see a play date in the future!

  4. Love reading the comments and your replies. I’m thinking the solution lies more in the education of the public at large to spay and neuter your dogs and cats! People think “oh, it would be so cute for our dog/cat to have puppies/kittens”. Well then, what happens to the little ones? It’s not enough to have just one animal? Yes puppies and kittens are cute, but they also take time and money to care for before they find a home. Or, need to go to a shelter that is likely already busting at the seams. And guys, get over the fact that neutering your dog does NOT take away from your personal manhood. Geesh!!! …. Apparently I hopped up on your soapbox Patty!
