“Are You Sick?” “No, I’m Just Not Wearing Any Makeup.”

Yes, just like the cartoon…this happened to me.

It was many years ago, when I was young and cute, skin shiny, face thin, some might have said beautiful.

Little did I know…that was only when I wore makeup.

Ok, let’s be honest…I almost NEVER left the house without makeup.

But then there was that one day I felt lazy,

And just needed a few things from the grocery store,

And I thought “This isn’t so bad”.

I mean…no one was running away in fear when they looked at me, I must not look that bad…maybe it had all been in my head all those years.

Then I saw my brother-in-law (my now ex-brother-in-law…and no – his comment had nothing to do with the divorce!)…

Mark took one look at me with a shocked, yet caring look on his face and said (ever so gently)…

“Are you sick?”

I burst out laughing and said “No, I’m fine – I’m just not wearing any makeup!”

Internally thinking…’Hrmph – lesson learned’.

I now wear makeup whenever I leave the house.

And very rarely does anyone ever think I’m sick!

And even when I am having a bad health day – people sometimes say “You look good!”

I just smile and say Thank You…

And whisper a little prayer…”Thank you God, for makeup!”

I hardly ever wear make-up anymore. I don’t have time and I’m too tired. Most people don’t ask me if I’m sick they just say “you look so tired.” In my head I’m thinkin’ “damn straight honey, I’m whipped.” I just smile and say “I’m fine just busy so yes tired”, but I’ve always got some smart unspoken remark bouncing around in my head. πŸ™‚

    • Karla – you do always have GREAT remarks…I wish I could hear them!!! I completely get it…but I grew up with a Mom who always put her ‘face’ on every morning…the only thing I don’t do is wear lipstick – she’d never leave the house without lipstick too! πŸ™‚

  2. I remember one time in high school stopping by your house with a friend without calling first and you didn’t have any makeup on. You were so mad at me!!!

I know – I hardly go out without makeup either. I forgot my under eye concealer the other day and got asked if I’d been punched in the eye. Nope, those are BAGS so get over it!

But the next day it was 100 degrees and my AC isn’t working. Shelby and I said “screw it” and went for frozen yoghurt in yoga pants, glasses, and no makeup. So I agree with Karla – some days its just not worth the effort!

    • I think I remember that moment…was it your cousin? Too funny. Isn’t it amazing what makeup does for us? And some days I wonder…why are women so conditioned to wear makeup and once again men get away with looking natural? Oh well. Those guys have it easy (in so many ways)! πŸ™‚ And yes, I agree somedays it isn’t worth the effort! But old habits die hard!

  3. I’ve had the same thing happen. Does this only happen to very pale women?
